The Big Plan

Lynne and Hunter,

We wrote this up to make sure we're all on the same page about where
you are, where you'd like to be, and how we can help you get there.
Please feel free to comment, always. We're just here to make things
easier.

Hunter is 14 years old and one of the best skiiers in the country.
His rigorous training schedule demands that he be enrolled in an
online school; he is currently a 9th grader in the Colorado Internet
Charter school K-12.com/APEX Learning. Since entering the 9th grade
his work load and the intensity of deadlines has drastically
increased. Both he and his mother would like to revamp his learning
proccess, reducing the time spent digging for answers while increasing
both his grades and his understanding of the material.

We think with a few changes the stress of being constantly behind
deadline can be alleviated. Our goal is to rearrange Hunter's school
routine so that he is more in control of it. This would mean only
3-4 three hour classes per week (in order to not only catch up but
also get ahead when needed); however, the expectation would be that
Hunter review a summary packet --before--completing the lesson.

We will ensure that all of the deadlines are organized and taken care
of with time to accomodate ski-training. If things go as planned,
Hunter's mom can have her life back and Hunter can stop dreading his
courses. Who knows, they might even be enjoyable? Ok, that's a goal,
but for now we'll just focus on staying on top of things.

Main Objectives
1) Create a student with faith in their ability to learn and a set of skills
to approach any learning/material
2) Rework lifestyle to be able to approach classes in a timely and
effective manner
3) Integrate schoolwork with the demands of training
4) Improve performance to passing or better in all courses (to
allow for possible
transfer/graduation)

Methods
1) Organization
a. Create a folder for each subject and a...
b. Calendar of deadlines/assignments, global and
individual to subject...,
c. Ski schedule for the season
d. Plan ahead to reduce conflicts between school and training

2) Preparation
a. We'll provide master summary/review documents (1-2 pages) w/...
b. Test attached and...
c. Key terms highlighted
d. Summary reviewed before lesson/assignment by Hunter

3) Study Skills
a. Pre-reading (titles, major terms, first sentences)
b. Learn to the test, using its questions as a guide
c. Big picture learning...real-world topics that relate to:
1. your interests
2. career relevance
3. personal opinions
d. Interact with the material not only through the
assignments but also through:
1. verbal recall
2. direct explanation and open conversation
3. possible integration of outside sources

Did we get the picture right? Anything else you would like to add?
Please tell us any/all of your expectations so we'll be best able to
adapt to them. We look forward to working with you, Hunter and you
too, Lynne. Thanks,

Kumar, Jake and Adam
